A Tzaddik in a Fur Coat: What Noach Got Wrong

Welcome to our weekly parsha class: Parshas Noach

Noach did everything God asked. He was a tzaddik, perfectly righteous. So why do the prophets call the flood “the waters of Noach”?

Rabbi Greenberg’s answer: Noach was right, but being right isn’t enough. He warned his generation for 120 years while building the ark, yet he never felt their pain. He was “a tzaddik in a fur coat”: warm and protected himself while everyone around him froze. The world, he explains, hadn’t yet reached its “bar mitzvah,” the maturity of da’as: real connection and empathy. Avraham, who pleads even for Sodom, brings that next step.

Along the way: why God praised Noach less to his face, the Baal Shem Tov’s reading of the teivah (ark) as the “word” of Torah and prayer, why the generation of the flood was sealed by theft of less than a penny, why Noach got drunk after the flood, and what Shem and Yefes teach us about seeing other people’s faults.

🔎 In this video we explore: • Why you praise someone fully behind their back, but only partly to their face • Teivah = word: the ark of Torah and prayer is for the very holy and the very lost alike • Why the flood is called “the waters of Noach,” and the tzaddik in a fur coat • Da’as, bar mitzvah and why Noach didn’t pray for his generation • The ark’s three levels and the three levels of prayer • Is it OK to steal from a billionaire? Why Judaism says no, even if no one is harmed • Two readings of Noach’s drunkenness, including the joy that stayed in its cocoon • The Baal Shem Tov: when the faults you see in others are a mirror

💡 Key Insights:

  • Doing everything right without empathy isn’t enough.
  • Morality that depends on convenience isn’t morality.
  • True joy breaks out of its cocoon and includes others.
  • When you see someone’s fault, ask how you can help, not how bad they are.
